Lee shows more feminism in his To Kill A Mockinbird than Fitzgerald in The Great Gatsby. Women in to kill a mockingbird are more criticized than women in the great gatsby.
Evidence: "I was not sure, but Jem told me i was being a girl" (4.119) 2. "I wondered at the world of women" (24.53) 3. "Scout stop acting like such a girl" 3. Daisy and Mrs.Wilson were held to high standards and praised by their husband in to kill a mockingbird Myella and Scout weren't treated with such respect.
1. The theme of feminism. Difficulty hard
2. Jem and Dill kept saying that Scout was acting and becoming more like a female even though she is a female.
3.Jem and Dill said Scout was becoming more like a girl when they were trying to put the notebook by Boo's window, even thogh Scout is a girl.
4. This section and evidence is different from a section or idea in Gatsby because they regarded women as equals and treated them as prizes.
Harper Lee makes it so Scout is criticize by her friends(Dill)
and even family (Aunt Alexandra, Scout), while fitzgerald creates the women in his book to be treated as prizes to be won and not criticized.

In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee shows racism and segregation than in The Great Gatsby.
Difficulty Level: Medium
Evidence:"My folks said your daddy was a disgrace an' that nigger oughta hang from the water-tank!" (76)
Evidence:"He despises negroes, won't have one near him."(156)
1. This takes place place in Maycomb Alabama
2. Atticus was a lawyer
3. Tom Robinson was a black man charged with raping a white woman.
4. Atticus is going to be his lawyer and is going to defend him
5. Tom Robinson is innocent, but is still being charged
My evidence proves that the theme of the book is based on racism. Throughout the book, Atticus wants to show Jem and Scout to have respect towards all people.

Lee develops a more in-depth analysis in relevance to symbolism in "To Kill a Mockingbird" than Fitzgerald does in "The Great Gatsby".
Difficulty level: Hard
Evidence #1: "I'd rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." (Lee 90).
Contextualize: The first time that mockingbirds appear in the book is during this scenario in chapter 10 when Scout and Jem are learning how to use their air rifles in their back yard and Atticus advises them not to shoot the mockingbirds. Scout was evidently shocked by Atticus' advice when she says that it was the only time she had ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something.
Evidence #2: "Your father's right", she said. "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens don't nest in comcribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." (Lee 90)
Contextualize: This is told to Scout after she asks Miss Maudie about Atticus telling her it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. She wants to know the reasoning behind it being known as a sin.
In essence, Lee utilizes the characteristics of a mockingbird as a representation of innocence. Mockingbirds are shown to be harmless creatures that do not intentionally do wrong. Boo Radley himself can be seen as a "mockingbird" because everyone gossips and jokes about him; furthermore, in reality, he is a very innocent man.
1. Difficulty: Hard
2. Evidence: " weak damsels in distress"
3. Context: Fitzgerald portrays the women in the book The Great Gatsby as weak, submissive, and constantly depending on their husbands or men. Daisy is portrayed as always listening and doing what Tom and Gatsby always wants her to do.
4. Analysis: This is a contrast to how Lee portrays the women in her book. Lee gives strong personalities to Calpurnia, Scout, Miss Maudie and Aunt Alexandra. Each of these women all play sabrina chen pd.4

The social clases in "To kill a mockingbird" and in "The Great Gatsby" were different, Fitzgeralds characters were very wealthy and in Lee's characters were poor.
Evidence:
"There was nno hurry, for there was nowhere to go,nothinig to buy and no money to buy it with" (Lee 5)
Lee portrays symbolism by using mocking birds.Mocking birds symbolized the innocence of people (Boo Radley). Boo was very conservative and stayed to himself but also helped Jem and Scout when they needed him. Fitzgerald used many symbols in the Great Gatsby but he only symbolized materialistic objects such as cars, money, wealth, lavish lifestyle, etc.. This could also connect to how in The Great Gatsby and To Kill A Mockingbird thye share different views on life and the American Dream because of the different social classes they live in , for fitzgerald they lived a very lavish life, and in to kill a mockingbird they were facing poverty and the great depression.
Difficulty:Hard
Evidence: "But remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird".(90) "Your fathers right she said mocking birds don't do one thing but makie music for us to enjoy" (90)
In the Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald uses many symbols such as color and weather to symbollize the different moods that occur throughout the book, Fitzgerald and Lee are both very different because it's talking about the wealthy and the poor and Fitzgerald's symbold are a little more vague compared to Lee's because during this point in time ( the great depression) more people could relate to To Kill A Mockingbird.
Summarize/contextualize:
1) This takes place during the 1930's during the great depression in a small town called Mayvomb in Alabama when Atticus and Ms.Maudie were talking to Jem and Scout (for both pieces of evidence from To Kill A Mockingbird).
2)This takes place in west egg in New York. Throughout the story Fitzgerald hints at many of these different symbols that all add up to relate to achieving the American dream.
Harper Lee shows mocking birds as symobls of innocence I think that Boo Radley is a symobl of innoce.

"The witness [Bob Ewell] said he never thought of it, he had never called a doctor to any of his'n in his life, and if he had it would have cost him five dollars"(125).
Difficulty: Easy
Context: Atticus Finch, a lawyer, ask why nobody called for a doctor when Mayella had a black eye and was beaten.
Analysis: In the Great Gatsby, Myrtle and Catherine repersented the poor who were not dirt poor that they couldn't afford a doctor unlike in To Kill a Mockingbird, Mayella Ewell, it toke her a year to save enough nickels and coins to buy ice cream for her siblings.
"it was everybody for himself.."(183)
Difficulty: Easy
Context: During the Tom Robinson case, the jury learned the Ewell's even though they share the same blood, they don't help each other.
Analysis: In the Great Gatsby, we see Myrthle and Catherine close and friendly because even though their sisters, they interact as best friends and we can tell their intimate with each other when Catherine sides with Myrthle by telling Nick that Myrthle deserves to be with Tom. However, In To Kill a Mockingbird, the Ewells don't interact much together as a family because Tom Robinson said he feels bad for Mayella because she's only doing the housework while most of the children are just staring out at the windows.
"..thier[ The Ewells] relief check was far from enough to feed the family.." (183)
Difficulty: Easy
Context: The jury learn that Bob Ewell doesn't have a job or can't keep a job ,so their family get their funds from the government.
Analysis: In the The Great Gatsby, Wilson repersented the poor who is not as poor as Bob Ewell because he does have a job by selling cars. In To Kill a Mockingbird

To Kill a Mockingbird's characters economic level has less of an impact on social life than The Great Gatsby. The characters in To Kill a Mockingbird do not all live on the same level such as the people in the court, church, and Scout's school. In The Great Gatsby the poor are more sperated and not included with the more fortunate people. A student in Scout's school named Walter is very poor and cannot afford to buy lunch or bring lunch to school, instead of treating him differently like he is disgusting or ill but she offers him a quarter to pay for his lunch and says "here Walter come and get it". This shows that the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird are more understanding than they are in The Great Gatsby where they wouldent do something considerate as that.
Although To Kill a Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby have the same general idea of achieving the American dream, they have different views on the way people respond to unfair judgment. Atticus Finch is the father of the narrator, Scout, and her brother Jem. Atticus has very strong beliefs, and does not go against them despite public opinion. People believe that Atticus Finch allows his kids to “run wild” and he is a “nigger-lover” (83) however, he never changes the way he conducts himself or compromises his beliefs, as oppose to the characters in The Great Gatsby, who conform to what they believe society expects from them. The characters in The Great Gatsby attempt to fit the norm in society, as oppose to the main characters in To Kill a Mockingbird who, despite hardship, support individuality and voicing your opinion.

In To Kill A Mockingbird and in The Great Gatsby, symbolism was used in order to identify concepts that go beyond the literal definition of the word. However, it is evident that Fitzgerald used more symbolism than Lee, but their concepts were different. For instance, the color "white", from The Great Gatsby, and the "mockingbird", from To Kill A Mockingbird, both represent the concept of innocence; however, the nature of this concept is different in both books.
Difficulty: Hard
Evidence #1: Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (90)
Context: Atticus was talking to Jem one day after Jem and Jean, who are his children, had started taking lessons with Uncle Jack on how to use their new air- rifles. The air- rifles were a gift from Atticus. Atticus tells Jem that there are limitations to what he could shoot at when they went to the back yard to practice. While Atticus encouraged his children to practice by shooting at tin cans, he knew they were going to want to shoot at birds to increase the difficulty of their hobby. So, Atticus tells Jean that they could shoot all the bluejays that they want, but to never kill a mockingbird.
Analysis: Bluejays represent the evil, bad or sneaky people that there are in Maycomb. The mockingbirds represent the innocent people from Maycomb. When Atticus tells Jem that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird, he is saying that it is wrong to harm good people since "mockingbird" represents innocent people. However, in The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald used white to describe the white dresses of Daisy and Jordan, symbolizing innocence in these females. The big difference is that while innocence in To Kill A Mockingbird is represented directly with a living thing (mockingbird), in The Great Gatsby innocence is represented with the color of a garment, something that is put on as a cover over the body. Therefore, the innocence in To Kill A Mockingbird is alive since it is represented with a mockingbird, while the innocence in The Great Gatsby is fake since it is simply a cover or garment.
Evidence # 2: “He likened Tom’s death to the senseless slaughter of songbirds by hunters and children…” (241)
Context: After Tom Robinson's death, Mr. Underwood wrote an article/advertisement expressing what had happened with Tom in jail. Mr. Underwood was bitter and direct with his words, so clear that children were able to understand it. Even though Tom was trying to escape, Mr. Underwood thought that it was wrong to kill him.
Analysis: The word "senseless"
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee's symbolism is more deep and meaningful than the symbolism in The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald. By using the mockingbird it shows the use of a more abstract object than the car used in The Great Gatsby.
Difficulty Level: Moderate
Evidence; "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." (Lee 90)
Context; In this part of the book, Scout was having a conversation about something Atticus said with Miss Maudie. Atticus gave Scout and Jem air-rifles and wouldnt let them use it. He specifically told them they could hit bluejays but its a sin to kill a mockingbird. Scout was curious about why Atticus said that because that was the first time he said something was a sin, so Scout asked Miss Maudie about it. Miss Maudie agreed with Atticus and explained to Scout why it was a sin.
Analysis; In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the mockingbird represents the good and innocence in people
Harper Lee shows much more racism in To Kill a Mockingbird than in The Great Gatsby.
difficulty: Extra hard
evidence: "nigger"
"You aren't really a nigger-lover, then, are you?"
"This is the first time Scout and Jem experience racism first-hand. They feel like they're the objects of someone else's racism, which sure put them in a unique position"
Lee exposes the negitive aspects to the american dream while Fitzgerald expresses the luxeries of the americans dream.
Evidence: ".. because that was the only way to pay me, he has no money." (124)
Context: Atticus was telling Scout that people won't always have money to pay back what you owe them, so he tells him that that there are others ways to pay back.
Analysis: A lot of people don't have money to be giving around in the book, "To Kill a MockingBird". A lot of people barely make enough money to live freely. they have to be constantly working to survive in life. They would probably stay in that postion for the rest of there lives. In the Great Gatsby the main characters aren't doing any physical labor to make money. The characters are not struggling finacially. they have enouh money to spare to buy luxeries such as cars and big Mansions. The characters in the "to KIll A Mockingbird" have been living in the same houses for generations. Many of the characters dont have cars.
Difference : representation of night
Evidence:"Shuffle-foot had not stopped with us this time. His trousers swished softly and steadily. Then they stopped. He was running toward us with no child's steps." Run, Scout! Run! Run! Jem screamed I took one giant step and found myself reeling my arms useless, in the dark, I could not keep my balance."Jem, Jem,help me Jem!"(261)
Context: When jem and Scout had just finished performing in a play for halloween at night, they decided to walk back home. They walked outside the school building when Scout suddnely fell over. The tow were still trying to get away from the person.
Analysis: The night is in both books represents suspense as the reader reads. In the Great Gatsby there are so many delightful moments that makes the reader happy and would want to keep reading to see what else the author is going to say to please the readers mind. There is also a difference in that the Great Gatsby there is In the Great Gatsby night represented a feeling of wonder and delight. However in To Kill a Mockingbird it is the complete opposite as it represents that something sinister is going on. Therefore the Great Gatsby represents wonder and delight and To Kill a mockingbird represnts a sinister moment.

Lee creates better symbolism than Fitzgerald.
Difficulty level: Hard.
Evidence:
1. "But remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird" (Lee 90).
2. "Atticus disengaged himself and looked at me. 'What do you mean?' 'Well, it'd be sort of like shooting a mockingbird, wouldn't it?'" (Page 276).
Summarize:
1. Atticus is somewhat older than most of the other fathers in Maycomb. One day, a mad dog appears, wandering down the main street toward the Finches’ house. Atticus, who returns home with Heck Tate, Heck brings a rifle and asks Atticus to shoot the animal. Atticus does so, hitting the dog with his first shot despite his considerable distance from the dog.
2. Tom Robinson was accused to raped to a woman and he caught into the jail. However, he was innocent. Right noe, he died for no reason and now the man responsible is dead: Let the dead bury the dead.
The symbolism of mockingbird represent innocent of people in “To Kill A Mockingbird” and the symbolism of green light represent the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy in “The Great Gatsby”.

Difference: Symbols to show how characters accomplish their American dream
1. Difficulty:Hard
2. Evidence: "When he was nearly thirteen , my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow" (Lee 3).
3.Context: Series of events occured that lead to Jem's accident. His left arm was shorter than his right arm. He feared that he couldn't play football, because of his injury.
4. Explaination: The symbol broken arm is like losing the American dream. Something broken means that it is incomplete. In The Great Gatsby an incomplete goal is not being able to accomplish the American dream. So, the broken arm for To Kill a Mockingbird would be a lost of hope until fixed, losing hope is like not accomplishing the American dream. Where as, in The Great Gatsby the symbol is car because the car can stop someone's American dream or fufill it by harming them or giving the person hope.
1. Difficulty: Hard
2. "Well it'd be sort of shottin' a mocking bird, wouldn't it?" (276)
3. Boo made a favor for everyone in town by killing Bob. This was a secret between the sheriff, Atticus, and Scout. Atticus is Scout's dad and he thought it would be bad to keep this a secret, since this was hiding injustice and he feared Scout would disrespect him. Scout understood that getting attention for Boo would be hurting him because Boo was a private man. Boo prefers to be private because he is a 30 year old man that is already used to living home privately.
4. The symbol mockingbird is innocent and should not be harmed from the strong. The mocking bird is Boo since the sheriff and Atticus were discussing if they were going to publicly expose what happened. Boo's American dream is simple, which is to live a private life. His dream would be shattered if he was exposed of killing a man. Boo's dream is fufilled because no one exposed what happened, it was kept a secret. The gossip from The Great Gatsby exposed many lies and leads to many losing their American dreams.
5. Raymond Huang period 8
Thesis: The book To Kill a Mockingbird the symbolism Mockingbird represents Arthur Radley while in The Great Gatsby the symbolism weather represent the relationship between characters.
Evidence:
1)"Atticus only answer for him was to mind his own business and let the Radleys mind theirs, they had the right to"(pg.13)
2) "But remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."(pg.119)
3) "He gently released my my hand, opened the door, went inside, and shut the door behind him. I never saw him again."(pg.373)
4)"Just standing on the Radley porch was enough"(pg.374)
Summary:
1) Jem got interested in Boo Radley although his real name is Arthur Radley the kids jem call him. Jem got interested in this character because he has been told that he hasn't come out of his house since 25 years ago, as he ask Atticus; his father his father tells not to be nosy.
2) Jem and Scout are learning how to shoot which uncle Jack and Atticus are showing them. As they are practicing how to shoot Atticus tell Jem and Scout that he rather shoot a thin can and not a bird and specially a mocking bird.
3) Boo Rodley ask Scout to escort him to his house because he so seem afraid to go by himself. As they get to the house, which is at night, Boo Radley let goof her hand and goes in his house but as she says he was never saw again.
4) As Scout leaves Radley in his house, she turns arounds and see her town from a position that she has never seen before, from that position she says she can see the whole time.
Analysis:
1) Jem getting interested in Radley since the beginning of the book this is mention it shows that Radley will be disturbed.
2) This means that killing a mockingbird is bad because their peaceful and all they do is sing which shows that represents Radley because Arthur never disturbs no one and throughout the book he bought joy to Atticus by saving his kids.
3) This mean that since scout is leading Radley to his house it shows that at the end Scout is keeping Radley in silence since she never heard of him again which can also be said that the mockingbird is left alone from the kids.
4)This means that as Scout sees Radleys point of view, she beggings to understand Radley's perspective and beggings to understand why he stays inside which can show that Scout learns how is a sin to kill a mockingbird.

Harper Lee portrays symbolism through mockingbirds. Mockingbirds are used to symbolize the innocence of people; the innocence against the bad/evil that goes around Maycomb. While Fitzgerald uses portrays symbolism through artistic design like colors and specific objects like cars. Lee's symbolism is more better than Fitzgeralds' The Great Gatsby.
Evid 1: Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." (Lee 90)
Context: Scout was having a conversation about a concept Atticus said with Miss Maudie. Atticus gave Scout and Jem air-rifles but would not let them use it. Atticus told them they could hit bluejays but its a sin to kill a mockingbird. Scout wondered about why Atticus said that because he said something was a sin, so Scout asked Miss Maudie about it. Miss Maudie agreed with Atticus and explained to Scout why shooting a Mockingbird is a sin.
Fitzgerald uses the color "white" to symbolize purity/innonence. the color white was used on a person, while Lee's symbol was used on abstract. Both authors portray innonence in their own way, however, Lee's portayal was more better and "out of the box" than Fitzgeralds.

In To Kill A Mocking Bird Harper Lee shows that women are expected to act lady like and not show them selfs as powerful figures, but dont change to society's expectations. While in The Great Gatbsy, F. Scott Fitzgerald shows that women are felt obligated to meet society's expectations.
Difficulty: Moderate
Evidence 1: "I said I could do nothing in a dress, she said i wasn't suppose to be doing anything that required pants" (81)
Context: Aunt Alexandrea is Atticus' sister. Alexandrea wants Scout to act lady like because that is the way in which all girls are expected to behave in Maycomb. Scout is used to being in overalls and pants it shows how she is used to dressing and how she feels more comfortable in.
Fitzgerald shows women as always wearing dresses and doing what women are required to do in the 1920's. In The Great Gatsby all women were portrayed as wearing dresses. Jordan was mentioned as an athletic looking women but Jordan seemed to hide that side with the glamours dresses. Lee shows that Scout doesn't want to hide that she's more comfortable in pants, Scout feels like more can be done in pants than in a dress. Aunt Alexandrea can be considered to be society telling Scout that she "wasnt suppose to be doing anything that required pants", in which Scout questions why should she wear an item that she won't be able to do the stuff she enjoys doing.
To Kill a Mockingbird has more compassion than The Great Gatsby.
Evidence:
1. "until you climb into his skin and walk around in it" (30)
2. "So if spitting in my face and threatening me saved Mayella Ewell one extra beating, that's something I'll gladly take" (218)
3. "It's not okay to hate anybody" (246)
Context:
1.Scout does not want to go to school and wants to be taught at home. Scout does not like her teacher, Miss Caroline.
2. Mr. Ewell curses at Atticus, spits on Atticus's face, and threatened to kill Atticus when Atticus was leaving the post office. Atticus believes that Mr. Ewell beaten up he daughter, Mayella and accused Tom Robinson for hurting Mayella.
3. Miss Gates, Scout's teacher, gave a lesson about Hitler. Scout was confused on why Miss Gates hated Hitler so much.
Harper Lee creates Atticus, a father, to teach his children to be compassionate towards people while Fitzgerald creates Tom and Mr. Wilson as revengeful people.

1. Thesis: To Kill a Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby share different views on America through the use of symbolism despite the fact that they both are about American Dreams. Lee uses the symbol of Mockingbirds show innocence while Fitzgerald uses symbol of weather to describe the relationship of Gatsby and Daisy and they both uses the symbol to represent their character's American Dreams.
2. Evidence: "They don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mocking bird." (Lee 90).
3. Summarize/contextualize: Miss Maudie was explaining to Scout that her father was right about killing a mockingbird is a sin because they don't do anything harmful but sing to us.
4. Analysis: In the book To Kill a Mockingbird; Mockingbirds represent the innocence of people such as Tom Robinson and Boo Radley who lived in Maycomb but are still punished without committing evil. Normally American Dreams based on the Declaration of Independence states that all men are equal regardless of race, religion and social class but there was no American Dreams in Maycomb. Racism interfered the American Dreams within their society and caused corruption. The innocence of Tom Robinson who was blamed for raping and beating Mayella was killed because through his trail; Bob Ewell's words were superior than Tom Robinson since he wasn't white. However in The Great Gatsby, American Dreams can be achieved despite race, religion and social class because Gatsby had a dream to be with Daisy. Although she already have a husband he didn't give up hope in refilling his American Dream. Fitzgerald uses the weather to symbolize the relationship with Gatsby and Daisy showing rains describing the misfortune and unhappiness, while the sun shows the happiness. Fitzgerald and Lee show opposite view of each other on America because he shows America as a place where there are opportunities to achieve your American Dream although it may not be successful while Lee shows America of a place that had lost of freedom and how it's changed.

Lee presents a theme of innocence through children in To Kill a Mockingbird. Where in The Great Gatsby that theme is not presented.
Difficulty Level: Difficult
Evidence 1:"we went in the house I saw he had been crying; his face was dirty in the right places, but I thought it odd that I had not heard him"(Lee 63).
Who: Jem, Scout, Mr. Nathan Radley, Boo Radley
What: The tree being filled with cement by the Radley place.
When: After Jem and Scout return from school
Where: The Radley's oak tree.
Context: Jem and Scout are on their way home from school and by this time are usually finding little presents by the Radley's oak tree. They want to deliver a letter to Boo Radley because they think he is leaving them these gifts. However, when Jem goes to deliver the letter the tree hole is clogged with cement and Jem asks why Mr. Nathan Radley why. His response was the tree was dying but when Jem asks, his father Atticus is that tree dying; he says no it is as fit as you are Jem. Jem notices what has happened and starts to cry.
Analysis: Jem is crying because he does not understand why Mr. Nathan Radley would do such a thing. The reason Mr. Nathan Radley clogged the tree is because he does not want his brother Arthur “Boo” Radley to have communication with anyone. Jem is crying because he does not under why Mr. Nathan Radley would do such a mean thing, showing his innocence because children do not understand why someone might do something because they are innocent and are knowledgeable of the real world.
Evidence 2: “It was Jem’s turn to cry. His face was streaked with angry tears… It ain’t right” (Lee 212)
Who: Jem, Scout
What: Jem is crying
When: After the verdict of Tom Robinson’s case
Where: Outside the courtroom
Context: Jem and Scout leave the trial of Mr. Tom Robinson, a Negro who was accused of raping Mayella. Atticus presents the evidence that shows that his client Tom Robinson did not rape her and that Mayella was the one lusting for a black man, but her father Bob Ewell hits his daughter and then tells the court that this innocent man Tom Robinson raped her. Since this is taking place in the South in the 1930’s there is still strong racism. Even though he is innocent the jury rules guilty, so after the trial Jem is crying tears of anger.
Analysis: Jem is crying tears of anger this time. He is twelve years old and still learning the ways of the world. Lee is expressing her theme of innocence through children because Jem does not understand how innocent Tom Robinson received the verdict guilty when there was no scientific evidence. The theme of innocence through children is being shown because Jem crying is showing how he does not understand this injustice and saying, “It ain’t right” and he cannot grab the reality of how evil this verdict was.
Dear Sammy-
The difficulty level is not hard. It is obvious that there are few children in Gatsby. It would be easy. Can you expand? Maybe the concept of innocence has to do with Gatsby's innocence versus Tom's innocence. Is one more innocent than the other? Does the reader feel worse for one over the other?

One big diffrence i saw in both the great gatsby and in To Kill A Mockingbird is with the characters. In the Great Gatsby the characters are all these snobby rich people who live a lavish and fancy lifestyle. In to Kill A Mockingbird the characters are more humble and they are struggling since in the time period they are during the Great Depression.
Evidence: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” (Lee)
Analysis- This quote from To Kill A Mockingbird shows us that most characters in the book struggled other than in the Great Gatsby they were rich and had huge amounts of money.

Lee creates stronger, more prideful female characters compare to the female characters Fitzgerald creates.
Difficulty level: Moderate
Evidence:
1) "My fists were clenced and I was ready to let fly." (lee 99)
2) "Scout's got to learn to keep her head.."(lee 116)
3) Daisy believed all a girl could be was a "beautiful little fool"
4) Daisy knew of her husbands affair
Analysis:
1) Scout was beginning to get picked on in school because of the case her father took. Kids began to say her father "defended niggers".
2) Atticus, Scouts father, was talking to his brother Jem after Scout got into a fight with her cousin Francis because he said Atticus was a "nigger-lover".
3) Daisy was talking to her cousin Nick outside of her house. She was explaining to him how she believed that all a girl could be was a beautiful little fool, also refering to her reaction of her daughters birth.
4) Daisy was aware of her husbands affair. Her husband took a call from his mistress at a dinner party with her and her cousin.
Fitzgerald created women who were weak and dependent on men in order to live a wealthy, lavish life. Which is a reason that Daisy did not leave Tom, even though she was aware of his affair. She had a child with Tom, and he provided a home for her. Which is why Daisy believed that all girls can be were beautiful little fools. However, Scout proved her wrong. Lee created Scout as a prideful young girl. Scout had no problem defending her and her family, even if that meant getting into fights with boys. Lee creates a stronger more prideful female lead compared to Fitzgerald's weak female lead.
Dear Clifton
I really like your thesis statement and your evidence connects back to it.
Eyad-
I think this topic is better than the characterization one. I would revisit your wording. There is no such thing as "more better." My suggestion is to identify WHY one is better than the other. The word "better" is the same as "more better". Good, better, best.
Dear Sarah, i understand that you want to show how Lee shows racism and segregation better that Gatsby, but you also have to connect to evidence from The Great Gatsby. However, i agree with your point.
Dear Eddy
I like your thesis statement, but i think you should add more evidence to prove your point.
To Sammy:
Your analysis for your theme or chosen craft is very well worded and very detailed. The information you chose is well-used and connects well with your chosen craft. Your 5 W's are very specific and connects well.
- Sabrina Chen pd.5
To Jessica Casimiro,
I like what you are trying to say, that first piece of evidence is very great, but you are going to need more evidence to support your claim, and make your claim stronger. I feel like you can bring out more with this topic.
Dear Eyad, i like your topic but its not that hard because you can clearly see that mockingbirds represent the innocence based on the cover showing a mockingbird and the knothole where boo left gifts for the kids this shows that Boo represents the innocence and good. The knothole is like Boos nest so Lee is comparing Boo to a mockingbird. I think you should go deeper with your analysis.
Dear Sammy Nijem,
Your Theme is not difficult. I also think your incorrect because there was innocence in the Great Gatsby. However, you helped transition quotes in sentences more clearly.
From Eyad pd 4
Dear Myself,
Rewrite your whole thesis statement. Maybe change your thesis topic. Also explain the analysis better.
Louis-
Remember that your thesis has to include something about the difference. Yes, the symbolism is different. That is fact. However, what do you want to prove? Is one better? Is one more imaginitive? Is one more interesting to America?
Ms K
Dear Dominic
I like the concept of the mocking jay representing the innocence, it was similar to mine. Throughout the book the most intricate thought would be the symbolism; mocking jay. You have very carefully picked out the right evidence to support your thesis.

CHRISTY LIN
this was perfect! imma steal this :) you completely made me change my theme for the essay
Dear Sarah ,
I agree with your idea that Lee uses racism and segragation in To Kill A Mockingbird. I think you should expand on your thoughts a little more a go deeper into why Tom Robinson was falsly accused of rape. I thought you had really good evidence but I think you should share your thoughts about how this issue of racism and segragation could possibly compare to Fitzgerald. You did an overall good job.
- Allison C.
Lee creates a stronger woman than Fitzgerald does.
Diffuculty: Hard
Evidence 1: I admired the ease and grace with which she handled heavy loads of dunty things (Lee 305)
3.Scout admires how Calpurnia on how she could do things herself without asking for help by other men. She doesn't rely on other people to take care of the Finch family. She also does the work better than some men do.
4.If this was in the Great Gatsby, she would've asked somebody else for help.
Evidence 2: It was like the era of Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose, without all her yelling.
3. This quote is in the book because Mrs. Dubose was a very demanding person and yells at people alot, she also does whatever to get what she wants.
4. In the Great Gatsby if a woman wanted something she would just keep quiet or say it quietly to her man.
Levy Shi Period 4
Dear Ashley,
This horrible just kidding it was great. I liked your evidecne, your thesis, i might change my topic to yours.
Sammy
To David Lima,
I like your point but I think you should cut that thesis statement and create a shorter one. What you're writing seems more like context rather than a thesis statement. Its too long.
Dear Louis,
I think your topic is extremely interesting! Your evidence and analysis fits your topic perfectly. However, I wish you would add evidence from The Great Gatsby. I know we don't have the book, however, all you need is tosummarize some evidence you remember from the book. Other than that.. GREAT WORK! :)
Harper Lee shows a sense of social class throughout the book which is also displayed in the Great Gatsby. while in the Great Gatsby social class is not strongly displayed and not as important.
Difficulty level: Moderate
Evidence: " Miss Caroline, He's a Cunningham...The cunninghams never take anything they can't pay back, they don't have much but they get along on what they have" (Lee,20)
Summarize: Miss caroline was checking to see who in class had lunch and who was going home for lunch, when she came to walter cunningham she asked him where is your lunch? but he didn’t have any and when she offered him a quarter he refused to take it.
Analysis: This qoute from To Kill a Mockingbird shows that not everyone as money, and many people do what they have to in order to get by, while in the Great Gatsby they only show the rich lifystyle of people.
- Sanji Downing
Dear Domonic,
I really like how you chose symbolism and how your symbol represented innocence. It was similar to mine you used good evidence and really went in depth with your analyisis.
Katherine-
You must make an opinion about the social classes, not just identify that they are different. What about the social classes is interesting, important, weak in one or the other of the books?

Dear Jesicca Casimiro,
I like your evidence, but can you find some more?
SAMMY NIJEM
this theme was really good, however i am not fully convinced since you only used 2 quotes. an extra quote would be perfect, this way you can extend your paragraphs (essay)

I like the evidence you used for your thesis, and I also like how simple ,but straightforward your context is.
Sunny Chang English Period: 4
Dear Jessica Casimiro,
I think your topic is interesting. However, I wish you added at least one more piece of evidence from To Kill A Mockingbird and evidence from The Great Gatsby.
Thesis:
Fitzgerald creates Gatsby as a person who lost hope, and Lee creates Boo Radley as a person who also lost hope. However, Gatsby is determined to find hope on his own, while Boo Radley gained hope through Scout.
Difficulty Level: Moderate
Evidence: 1. Gatsby creates luxurious parties in hope that one day Daisy would come in, 2. Gatsby moves to the house across the bay of Daisy's house. 3."a whole package of chewing gum, which we enjoyed" (60). 4."His lips parted into a timid smile, and our neighbor's image blurred with sudden tears." (270).
Summarize/Contextualize
1. Every weekend, Gatsby throws parties that go on all night and all people are allowed, waiting for Daisy to walk in.
2. Gatsby bought a house across the bay of Daisy's home because he wants to be close to her and find ways to see her.
3. After school starts, Jem and Scout pass by the knot-hole only to find carvings of soap, a few weeks later, they found a whole pack of gum.
4. This is after Scout tells Atticus and Mr. Tate that Boo Radley saved Jem and Boo Radley is grateful and shows his gratitude by smiling at Scout, which moves her to tears.
Anlysis:
In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby, on his own, uses his adopted behavior from Dan Cody to make a name for himself, so that Daisy will accept and love him. Gatsby gains his wealth and his mansion across the bay from Daisy's home, which implies that his hope of attaining Daisy grows. This is his hope for the American Dream growing through attaining Daisy. By Scout and Jem accepting the gifts in the knothole, they are giving Boo Radley hope that not all people despise him. Similarly, when Scout tells Mr. Tate and Atticus that Boo Radley saved Jem, Radley hope of someone seeing him as a human being, and identifying him as a hero grows.
Dear freshkid629
Your thesis statement is really weak, you should add to your thesis statement and cite your evidence.
Dear Clifton,
The previuos comment I wrote is not the actual one. I MADE A MISTAKE. But what I stated is correct. Your evidence is strong but expand more on your analysis. Also connect back to your theme
Eyad Farraj pd 4
Dear Ashley Rios
Indeed Lee did create a more of a prideful female characters. You have good evidence to back that up but i think your thesis could be better. Like how the author uses craft to portray how the female act, which can lead to both author writing style for the female characters.
From Jay
Allison-
I like your topic a lot. I really like how you said Gatsby has symbols that represent materialism. What do Harper Lee's symbols represent? Nature, right? Does that suggest that one of the books in more natural and realistic while the other is materialistic and too specific to a certain social class? Always address both texts. If you say one book is a certain way, it is necessary in contrasting to show what the other book is like.
Dear Sarah,
Your thesis statement difficulty is not that hard its fairly easy, you can tell easily. But you have the concept down. I suggest that you use the sceen where Scout learns that Tom Robinson is innocent but wont win because of his skin color. But you did good.
Allison -
I completely agree with your statement that Lee and Fitzgerald use different symbols to depict their personal thoughts on life; furthermore, I believe that Lee goes more in depth with the meaning of the mockingbird (indicating the idea of innocence) than Fitzgerald does with the "green light" (indicating the achievement of the American Dream.
Evidence: "Atticus disengaged himself and looked at me. "What do you mean?"" ""Well, it'd be sort of like shootin' a mockingbird, wouldn't it?"" (Lee 276)
Contextualize: This is the last time mockingbirds are referenced in the book when Scout talks to Atticus about bringing Boo Radley into court.
The only thing Boo Radley does is watch over the town of Maycomb; furthermore, he does no harm to anyone whatsoever. Similarly, mockingbirds are shown to be harmless creatures. Lee uses this line for Scout as a comparison to further analyze the idea of innocence. In essence, because Boo Radley and mockingbirds are similar in character, harming either one of them would be pointless and cruel.
In "The Great Gatsby", Fitzgerald uses various symbols-one of the most significant being the "green light"- to provide an idea about the strive to achieve the American Dream. Though Fitzgerald hints at the American Dream through multiple symbols, Lee utilizes one dominant symbol throughout the entirety of the book to completely sum up the idea of the innocence of people.
Dear Sammy,
I like the direction you are taking with your ideas. However, I believe you might be able to find a theme of innocents in The Great Gatsby as well. Even if you can't, some evidence provining that their is no innocents from the book would help prove your point. Other than that, good job ! :)
dear eyad,
i agree with what your saying about the difference in the book on how fitzgerald uses cars, colors, lights etc.. and in the mocking bird the book symbolizes the innocence of people
dear David Liam,
I think you started off really strong you have a good thesis and evidence. While your anaylsis could be stronger becuase it doesn't really connect back to your evidence and thesis as it should
Dear Levi,
You have good point but it definitely needs more than one piece of evidence otherwise your audience might not believe you.
From Ruben..
Dear Dominic,
I like your idea about symbolism, and you helped to understand the analysis that both authors developed.
Dear Sammy
The theme of innocence through children in To Kill a Mockingbird can be compare to Tom and how he is not innocence or gatsby and what he has done to get where he was in the time period of the book which he was rich. By comparing to someone else this will make the level of your essay difficult.
Evidence: One evidence that shows innoccence is when Jem got interested in Boo Radley which is in the beggining of the book. "When Jem would question him Atticus's only answer was for him to mind his own buisiness and let the Radley mind theirs."(pg.11).This shows the innocence of Jem because jem dont know why Bood Radley hasnt come out of his house for 25 years because Jem hasnt experince the real world or doesnt yet understand why radley stays inside since in the beggining of the book he believes that Maycomb is best place he knows, showing a child innocence.
Sanji-
What do you mean by "a sense of social class"? Use phrases that can make sense to your audience. Do you mean that the description of social classes are more realistic in Mockingbird? Or that the social classes embrace all of America as opposed to just the rich like in GAtsby?

Lee Harper shows that women are a powerful figure, there independent and can survive on there own. Rather than in Fitzgerald, he potrays the women to follow the rules and be lady like, women in The Great Gatsby depened on men and can't survive without them.
Difficulty: Moderate
Evidence: 1) "Why, I'll build me a little house and take me a couple of roomers.." (73 Lee)
2)"I could not possibly hope to be a lady if i wore breeches"(81 Lee)
3)"I declare to the lord you're gettin more like a girl every day! ... With that, I had no option but to join them" (52 Lee)
Context:1) Miss Maudie house has burned down and she has a vision of how she wants to build her own house.
2) Aunt Alexandra wants Scout to act lady like, since Scout wears trousers and presents her self as a boy
3) When Scout was questioning what Dill and Jem were about to do, she spoke up and said it was wrong. Jem see's scout as a little brother since she doesnt act girly. He states that shes acting more like a girl and thats where she notices and stops acting like that.
Dear Freshkid629
Your evidence is weak and my suggestion is to expand on the analysis. Also connect back to the theme.
This relates to american dream because its completley diffrent in both books. In The Great Gatsby the american dream is to have a Big house, Fancy cars, and alot of money. The American Dream in To Kill A Mockingbird is basically just to make it through the day to have your family with you since they are going through the Great Depression they just want to make money to support themselves and their families.
Dear fresh kid,
Your idea is not that hard since in to kill a mockingbird racism is obvious and not so much as obvious in the great gatsby, but still obvious when tom talks about the whites being the superior race. Also, you don't got any analysis.
Harper Lee and Fitzgerald characterize poverty through their characters by conveying the ignorance that lies amongst them.
In The Great Gastby Mr. Wilson was poor and had big dream ahead of him like moving west;however, it was hindered when his wife was killed. This made him want revenge and he sought out to kill. In To Kill A Mockingbird Bob Ewell embodied poverty and wanted revenge as well and tried to kill Atticus' children.
Evidence for gatsby
Myrtle (his wife who was hit by a car) this shattered his dreams of moving West and he became very belligerent.
Context: Mr. Wilson wanted a new life for his wife and himself and he believed that moving to the West would be for the best.
Evidence for Mockingbird:
After his daughter accussed and innoccent man, Bob Ewell felt like he still was getting enough attention,so he went after the children.
In chapter 28 'He slowly squeezed the breath out of me. I could not move.
In chapter 29 "Someone's been after my children.'
Context: After walking home from the pagent, Jem and Scout heard noises in the bushes assuming that it was Cecil trying to scare them because he did it before, but it was not; it was their attacker(Bob Ewell) who ran after them.
To Eddy Erazo,
I like where you are going, my opinion is that you should add more evidence to support your claim more, and add more context, also fix and add on to the ending of your analysis. One more thing, check twice before you post, you have some grammer errors.
Ashley-
Try to find evidence that is deeper or has a greater span than just a page in the book. Example: To describe Scout as a little fighter is fine. To explain her actions--like when she ran into the group of men who were going to bust into the jail--would embrace her whole being and give the audience a greater picture of Scout's strength.
ASHELY RIOS
I dont like your 3rd quote. It does not make sense to me because it is not supporting your theme. A "beautiful little fool" makes a woman seem weak. The rest of your quotes convince me with the idea that woman have pride.
Dear Anthony,
The Evidence you gave is strong for your theme. However, I would encourage that you expand on analysis and connect it back to your theme of powerful women.
Dear mostly everyone well 70% of yous guys i think you should try looking for other topics beside symbolism because most of the posts here are about symbolism.
Dear Ayleen Correa,
I think your topic is amazing! However, I think you should add in how when Gatsby first met Daisy she lived in a "big WHITE house" had a "WHITE car", because they were young at that time. They were innocent to the world. Other than that GREAT job ! :)
Dear Ashley Rios,
I think you have a really strong topic and great evedience to support and wonderful analysis that connects back to your evidence and topic.
Imani -
I think that your evidence and thesis are very strong; furthermore, I think you should try to analyze your evidence further. Other than the analysis, I think you are off to a great start!

Dear Numbers guy,
Good work. I liked your analysis because it was well explained with the symbol of mockingbirds. GREAT GREAT JOB
FRESHKID629
I understand what you are trying to prove, however you need more quotes. Try to connect to The Great Gatsby! Not convincing at all.
Dear Ashley,
The theme that you using is great and interesting too as you developed it and the evidence that you show goes with the flow in this case with the theme. I think the theme you is really interesting because is a difficult level and this essay can be expanded so much and it can show many different ways how Females are show that they are stronger than men in To kill a Mockingbird. Great work though.
Dear Sanji,
i love your ideas. But i feel that you should describe the social classes and give more evidence
I felt that the thesis wasn't very specific, and the difficulty level is hard because it isn't apparent, it's subtle. The evidence that Scout was about to hit some people who were making fun of her father, and that Daisy says that girls must be "beautiful little fools" is very distinctive. They are both on opposite sides of the spectrum of a strong female character. I applaud you on the pieces of evidence.
Harper Lee creates more independent and strong women than Fitzgerald.
Difficulty Level: Hard
Evidence: 1. "Catching Walter Cunningham in the schoolyard gave me some pleasure, but when i was rubbing his nose in the dirt Jem came by and told me to stop." (Lee 22)
Context: Scout is rubbing Walter's nose in the dirt and this shows how strong she is because she is fighting a boy. When she is rubbing his nose in the dirt she says that it gave her some pleasure. On the other hand Jem is more tolerant and has more compassion so she tells Scout to stop.
Evidence: 2. "This time, I split my knuckle to the bone on his front teeth. My left impaired, I sailed in with my right, but for long. Uncle Jack pinned my arms to my sides and said, "stand still!" (Lee 84)
Context: Scout has a strong character and shows that she independent because she doesn't need others to stand up for her. She also shows that she is strong because it doesn't matter who it is she is willing to fight and stand up for herself.
Harper Lee creates more independent women and he gives them a strong personality. On the other hand Fitzgerald gives the women a week personalities in which they have to depend on man.
Topic/Thesis: One idea that's different between To Kill a MockingBird and The Great Gatsby is that not everything is true and not everything is as they seem, until it's put to trial. Examples such as rumors and new experiences are part of this idea of revelation.
Difficulty: Moderate
Evidence: "One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them." (Lee 279)
Context: Scout sees Boo Radley with her own eyes for the first time, and her thick mind full of rumors about Boo just disappeared, while knowing the things he's done that night for her and Jem. Boo Radley was apparently a kind, shy, and timid person, aside from the rumors about him being a dark, desolate, phantom. Scout now knows how Boo felt, why he wanted to stay in hiding, because she put herself in his shoes.
Analysis: Although Gatsby and Boo Radley had something in common with false rumors spreading about them, Lee puts Boo at the end of the story to let Scout walk in his shoes to know how he felt and why he did what he did that night for her and Jem. Unlike Gatsby, who made his appearance in an early chapter, Fitzgerald spoils the mystery of Gatsby's real persona, which differentiates from a long term mystery of Lee's Boo Radley, showing that Boo isn't what he seems to be from those rumors and his previous acts. Boo was charcaterized as a kind person, from the fact that Scout accepts him for what he's done for her, and meeting him face to face was then put to trial.
Evidence: "I always thought Maycomb folks were the best folks in the world, least that's what they seemed like." (215)
Context: Based on experience, the area where Scout lived in was peaceful, becuase of the folks she's met so far. However, Scout begins to learn the truth about the tensions between those folks and other folks she found strange. Having experienced conflict between folks, she now finds Maycomb no longer a place to forever call home.
Analysis: Before knowing Maycomb folks were despising each other, Scout really thoughts they were the best folks in the world and Maycmb was a great place for her to call home. Now that Scout knew what her folks are really like in interaction, she feels she couldn't fit in, knowing that Maycomb folks aren't as they seem to be in the beginning. However, in contrast to Gatsby, Fitzgerald never focused much on giving false detail about something and giving the true story later on in the Great Gatsby. He doesn't show that not everything is as it seems, therefore he portrays overkill towards revelation.
Dear Ling Lan,
I don't really know what you mean when it is a sin to kill a mockingbird and talk about Atticus killing a dog. It doesn't really make sense to me can you elaborate.
Thank you,
Raymond Liang
Dear Dominic,
I like your idea about the Mocking bird showing innocence in the caracters in To Kill a Mockingbird but you have to show the differences that the symbol has with The Great Gatsby
dear, eddy erazo
your topic is very simple and the subject is very easy i think you should pick something more complex are atleast go deeper in your analysis since you talk about money problems which is easily noticed
Harper Lee's Atticus of To Kill a Mockingbird is created as an entire, almost polar opposites of Fitzgerald's idea of people in the early 1900's through his book The Great Gatsby.
Difficulty: Least Obvious.
Quote/Evidence:
"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view- until you climb into his and skin and walk around it." (Lee 30).
"You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don't let them get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change." (Lee 76).
Context: ( Of the first quote!)
Who: Scout and Atticus.
What: Atticus is giving Scout moral advice because Scout is having trouble in school and with people around her.
When: The beginning of Scout's school year.
Why: Atticus is concerned about Scout's feelings and interactions with other people.
Analysis: Atticus is created as an almost entirely opposite entity of The Great Gatsby. Contrary to The Great Gatsby, the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird show sympathy towards each other. Though the characters from The Great Gatsby have concern for each other, it is never sympathy like shown in To Kill a Mockingbird. In To Kill a Mockingbird, the less- materialistic sympathy and understanding is shown through the uncomplicated manner if Atticus and Scout's struggling degree of success. Atticus's astute words will lead Scout through situations in which Scout might act rashly and blindly, in which characters from The Great Gatsby do.
Dear Poppa Moon
I think that you have a great topic even though your topic and use good evidence. I think you should connect back to Gatsby more and explain how they are treated like prizes.
Dear Edmund Wong,
You have a lot of great evidence to show the difference between To Kill A Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby. Your claim is that in To Kill A Mockingbird Atticus teaches Scout lessons while in the Great Gatsby Tom and Wilson keeps fighting with revenge. I agree with your claim and I believe that your three evidences are strong enough to support your claim, because lessons are taught to Scout from each of the evidences used.
Raymond Huang pd.8
Analysis; In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the mockingbird represents the good and innocence in people. When it says its a sin to kill a mockingbird it talks about harming the good people in society. Lee goes more into depth with symbolism using a mockingbird to show the good and innocence in people.

Dear sabrina,
What page is that quote from? You didn't cite. Also, how can you tell that the women are submissive? The quote only says that they're weak, not submissive. Elaborate on how Lee gives strong personalities to the women. You should add another quote.
Emeline Fortes Pd.8
Dear Linglan Chen,
I like your pieces of evidence, but your thesis is a little too basic and you need to provide a connection with both of the books. Check your grammar and try to add more details. The topic you chose is very good because it would challenge you. You also manage to pick out your evidence correctly. I would use the part of the evidence # 2 that I am very going to use, expand with further details in your thesis and conection. You could do it!
Dear Erick Garrido, how does the first quote connect to strong independent women when Jem was the one who told her to pause?
I get the idea that Scout is doing harm and doing things her own way, but is physical violence necessary towards verbal violation when connecting to strong and independent?
A better analysis for being a strong independent women should be that women is able to fight for themselves, in a appropriate manner, that doesn't harm others physically.
Dear Erick Garrido
I liked your thesis statement, because it showed me something i didnt realize before. You supported your thesis statement very well with good evidence and analysis to back it up.

Dear Jessica,
I think your topic was great, but i believe that you should elaborate more on the significance of the choice of clothes. You express why Scout refuses to wear dresses, but you don't express how her not wearing the dresses expresses a stand for individuality as oppose to the women in the Great Gatsby who tried to be like everyone else.
Dear Erick,
I love how you used the difference about women and their power in these stories. I believe that you should right context for EACH peice of evidance and explain how the qutoes help your theme/thesis become stronger. Also write some analysis for each quote, explain it out for the reader.
- Brian Flores
Harper Lee creates more independent and strong women than Fitzgerald.
Difficulty Level: Hard
Evidence: "I declare to the lord you're gettin more like a girl every day! ... With that, I had no option but to join them" (52 Lee)
Context: Scouts was talking to Dill and Jem asking them what they were up to and she didnt think they were doing the right thing so she said something and expressed her opinion. Scout is seem as more of a tom boy rather than a girly girl. As she was growing up Atticus didn't teach her to act like a lady, and she usually climbed trees and played with her brother. She didnt grow up wearing dresses she wears overalls like a boy and is seen as one by her brother until she questions him.
Comparison: In the Great Gatsby Daisy was very weak minded and dependent on her husband. She would never confront her own husband about cheating however scout who is a little girl is able to question men and express her opinion
Dear Tony Huang,
It would be great if you explained in the thesis how both books are the "polar opposites" because both books take place during the Great Depression. You have great pieces of evidence also, but it would be great if you would add abit more context into the analysis and engrave the quote, then connect that quote to the Topic Sentence which is how both books are opposites (but in what way?). In addition, it would be great if you added more evidence about the Great Gatsbyby putting it in your own words so that you can directly compare those pieces of evidence to the ones you have about To Kill a Mockingbird.
Dear Dominic,
I agreed with your thesis statement. Reading your blog helped me out with my own blog because it was based on the same topic. I like how you supported your thesis statement with more than one quote and thorough analysis.

Eddy
everybody keep calm
Dear Raymond,
I like how you used a different piece of evidence other than just the Mockingbird. You were very creative in adding about Jem's arm and how that ruined his American dream.
Dear Dominic,
You have really good quotes to represent the Mockingbird and also very good context for them. I think the only thing you should improve on is adding analysis which will improve your essay when you do the rough draft over the weekend. But i generally like what you wrote. :)
Dear Christy Lin
I love your analysis because your analysis is very specific and you compare the difference between To Kill A Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby. I think you can add more evidences from To Kill A Mockingbird, to choose some other quotes, and your thesis is a little bit to long.
Dear Imani,
I like your pieces of evidence, however, remember that you must make the differences between the The Great Gatsby and To Kill A Mockingbird more clear. I think that you spoke more about the similarities than the differences. Remember to properly cite your quotes with page number. Keep it up!
Dear Raymond Liang,
Your thesis is not accurate.
I understand what you're trying to say that the night in both books represent a different mood of happy and something evil that is going to happen but I would have to disagree with you because in The Great Gatsby; the night is not necessarily happy as you see since there is a car accident where Myrtle was killed during the night.
Dear Katherine Rodriquez
I think your difference is too obvious but i do agree with it. Since they take place in different settings it is obvious there will be economic difference. I also think that your evidence is very strong to show this difference.
Dear Raymond Huang,
I agree with what you believe to be the American Dream in TKAM. Broken things symbolize a person's broken American Dream. However, I believe broken items wouldn't be hard? More of a Moderate difficulty. The analysis and the evidence you have is more than enough and will suffice.

Dear David Lima,
I think you should choose a deeper more complez topic because your topic was too obvious. The type of characters in each book were obviously different, so there wasn't much to learn from in your blog. Although your topic was most obvious you did support the topic well with your explaination.

Dear Victoria
Your thesis statement is very strong it is also very convincing. But i think you missed some parts in contex you should add more details. you should also conect back to The Great Gatspy and give an example from that book and then compare both of them.
Thesis: To Kill a Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby share different views on America, even if they're both about the american dream. In The Great Gatsby, economy/wealth seems more important to the people than those in To Kill a Mockingbird.
Evidence: 1.) "People moved slowly then... there was no hurry... nothing to buy and no money to buy it with..." (Lee 5).
2.) "I had the view of... the consoling proximity of millionaires-- all for eighty dollars a month." (Fitzgerald 5)
Analysis: Lee shows in To Kill a Mockingbird that people are basically careless. They're so calm and slow, and they have no money to buy anything. They're basically poor. However, in The Great Gatsby, there are millionaires, and the people in the book actually have money.

Dear William Hoo,
I agree with your claim which is Fitzgerald exposes the characters secrets earlier than Lee. You gave strong evidences to show that Boo's true characteristics are shown at the very end where as In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby persona is exposed earlier.

Dear Cliffton
Your post was really helpful to me because i had the same topic. You have really great evidence I just think you should work on connecting it to your analysis more and also connect it back to the great Gatsby

Dear Tony,
I liked your blog because it was a challenging topic and you supported it well with your evidence and analysis. Your blogs are one of the few blogs I've read that actually caught my attention and interest. It was appealing because even though the topic wasnt that obvious you made it really understandable.

Dear Raymond Huang
The fact that you mentioned the fact that Jem broke his arm while playing football supported the idea of losing the American dream. However if you read the next sentence he regained the American Dream when his arm healed so I'm not sure if you can still use that piece of evidence to support that.
By Raymond Liang
Dear David Lima your evidence does support your thesis but your saitation of your evidence was wrong you need the page not the authors name you should also have something more for the evidence.
Dear Raymond Liang,
I like your idea and I think you should use a quote from chapter 6 where Jem has to go back and get his pants. This happened during the night and it was quite suspenseful.
dear Louis Reinoso,
your thesis statement should be a little bit more complex in my opinion but the rest to me looks very good with all the evidence and all the analysis that explains and shows how you came up with your thesis.
Dear Tony,
I think that all of your information is really good. I especially like that you wrote out the 5W's which made it clearer to analyze. One thing that I think you could do to improve it is choosing a harder topic. Since you developed it so well, if you chose a more difficult topic, you will be eligable to get a higher grade, which you deserve. :)
Dear Edmund Wong
I like your use several quotes from To Kill A Mockingbrid, I think you can add more information for your analysis.
A major difference about the books in To kill a Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby are economic situations. The main characters in To Kill a Mockingbird are all poor and in a great depression. The main characters in The Great Gatsby are all rich and high class. The social classes are all different which could represent everyone own individual process of their American Dream.
Difficulty: Hard
Quotes:
1 "...nothing to buy, and no money to buy it..." (Lee 5)
2. " The cunninghams dont accept anything they can't pay back..." (Lee 21)
3. "...He probably never seen three quarters together in his entire life..." (Lee 20)
4. "...Mr. Cunningham would never pay us back in money..." (Lee 22)
5. "[Burris] is so poor that he only comes the beginning of the school year..." (Lee 43)
Dear Raymond Liang,
Your topic about the difference between Lee's and Fitzgerald's representation of night is a great topic to express the level of difficulty. You used an extreme piece evidence to prove your thesis, but you should use more evidence that relates to night. This topic is considered a bit too easy, obvious, when you notice it.
Dear David Lima,
I like the topic of the differences between the American Dream. Remember to write titles of the book with capital cases. Also, I think that the American Dream in To Kill A Mockingbird also surrounds justice along with the family values of being united. One of the main conflicts was with Tom and trying to save him from being unfairly convicted. So, apart from being united, the desire of Atticus of having justice in Maycomb also is part of the American Dream. You could probably search up the mood of when Tom was convicted.
Dear Imani L.
I agree with your idea of how poverty affects the characters in both To Kill a Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby in regards that poverty conveys the ignorance among them. Though it is a good thought, is it really, a difference? If poverty embodies both characters in both books, how is it a difference? Please reconsider another difference in both books!
The setting of To Kill A Mockingbird differs completely from the setting of The Great Gatsby because Lee created the setting as a very united and undeveloped town as oppose to Fitzgerald who described the setting as a fast -pace urban city.
"Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it." (Lee, 5)
Maycomb is a rural community full of fanatics. The people of Maycomb have impressive religious views and values. Despite Maycomb's undeveloped civilization the community is dense in the friendship sense. On the other hand, the setting of The Great Gatsby is urban and lonely. The characters are more for themselves and the only time they're united is for the sake of alcohol while attending Gatsby's parties.

Dear Clifton,
Your thesis statement was interesting and very helpful to me. You supported your thesis with good evidence and good analysis. I think you're blog was unique and useful
In the books, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald, they both have different types of people that view and prioritize certain things due to their social statuses. The characterization for each character is a pretty difficult thing to understand because there are many characters to just give a general statement.
Difficulty: Hard
Evidence for The Great Gatsby: When Daisy was introduced to Gatsby by Nick for the first time after a while, Gatsby immediately rushed to show Daisy his big fancy house he lived in, to show his wealth to her.
Summary of Evidence: In the Great Gatsby, having a big house showed where you stand in the social class and people in the book can see he was obviously "rich". So the house was just used to show and impress Daisy, a girl who Gatsby been fighting and struggling to get Daisy's love. The house didnt really have any sentamental value or real meaning to the people in The Great Gatsby, the house was just used to "show off".
How does the Evidence Differ from To Kill A Mocking Bird: Sticking with the houses of the stories, the characters of the book have a better understanding of morality and live by it. For example,
"There are just some kind of men who—who're so busy worrying about the next world they've never learned to live in this one, and you can look down the street and see the results." (Chap 5, pg 44)
This quote helps to prove that instead of the characters being careless and not worrying about the present like the people in the Great Gatsby, the characters in To Kill A Mockingbird are much more humble.
Kevin Cruz period 8
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee shows racism and segregation how ever in The Great Gatsby there arent that much racism.
Difficulty Level: Easy
Evidence:"My folks said your daddy was a disgrace an' that nigger oughta hang from the water-tank!" (76)
Evidence:"He despises negroes, won't have one near him."(156)
1. This takes place place in Maycomb Alabama
2. Atticus is a lawyer
3. Tom Robinson was a black man that is acused of raping a white girl.
4. Atticus is going to be his lawyer and is going to proove his inosence.
5. Tom Robinson is innocent, but is still being charged.
This Shows how racism affects Tom. He is innocent but he is still being charged for something he didnt even do.
Dear Ayleen C.,
I really like how your analysis connects back to your thesis statement. It's clear to me that those symblos were used in both The Great Gatsby and How To Kill a Mockingbird, but represented differnt ideas.
Dear Levy,
I loved the way that you were so direct: with few words you said what you wanted to say. However, try to make you thesis a little more complex. I think that your evidence, analysis and connection just need that extra touch of a nice complex thesis. I would personally try to copy your style of getting across my poiny with fewer words. Keep it going!
Dear Erick Garrido,
Your topic is very interesting and your pieces of evidence are relevant to it. I loved the way you displayed the 5w's in your context; however, I think you should use specific examples in your connection between To Kill A Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby. Say for instance how Daisy vacillated between Gatsby and Tom, but she was never alone.
Dear Anthony Diaz,
I like the depth of your thesis; however you must be careful with the part of "lady like" for The Great Gatsby. For instance, evidence #2 might show "lady like" women in To Kill A Mockingbird since they are basically criticizing what Jean wears. In my opinion, this quote would show the opposite of your thesis, or at least it would display a similarity between the books rather than a difference.
Cont. of another post
Topic: birds (mockingbird)
Difficulty: Hard
Evidence# 2: “Mr. Finch” (throughout the whole book)
Context: Mr. Finch is Atticus, Jean and Jem’s father, who is a lawyer in Maycomb. He was appointed for Tom’s case.
Analysis: The fact that Lee put “Finch” as the last name of the main family shows that this family represents something in society since a finch is a bird. Since it is not a mockingbird, it does not represent innocence, instead it represents justice. Mr. Finch is a lawyer, while Jean and Jem become more conscious about what is wrong and what is right in Maycomb as they grow up. Since this whole family seeks to fight for justice, like in Tom’s trial, “Finch” represents justice. However, in The Great Gatsby there was no symbol that represented justice because nobody seemed to care about righteousness as long as they can benefit from the corruption. The fact that Fitzgerald used multiple symbols and none represented justice even though many people, such as Gatsby, were breaking the law shows the lack of interest in these characters in doing the right things.
I wish to know if this works for my thesis. Any comments I will be grateful to receive them.
Dear Kevin Cruz,
The way you displayed the evidence for each book was fantastic! I feel that this is a fun topic and it is comfortable to work with. Just a little thing: in your last paragraph which was the connection part, try to mention the "house" in The Great Gatsby. I believe that this is one of the keywords you must repeat in the connection because that is what the Gatsby evidence is talking about.
Dear Sanji,
You are precise and consistent in your writing, two essential qualities for a great writer. However, remember to use your capital cases because it takes away formality in a person's writing.
Dear Nadine,
I love how your writing is very dynamic: you connect constantly to your thesis in a way that it all flows for the reader. I can't wait to see what other evidence you have.
Dear Allison,
Your thesis really caught my attention. It is intricate and it introduces very well your pieces of evidence. However, I believe that the mockingbird is the symbol of innocence, not Boo Radley, and since the mockingbird is representing Boo, then Boo IS innocent. Also remember your caps. Wonderful job!
Dear Ayleen,
Your topic was very interesting and analysis really caught my attention. You've helped me how to display evidence and expand on analysis more clearly.

Dear Sanji,
Your writing was very interesting and unique. However, remember to use you Capital cases when needed.
Dear Ayleen,
I really like your ideas and your connection involving the character to the birds.
Dear Emeline,
I really like your ideas it is unique and i agree with you.
Dear Erick Garrido,
I like your idea on how Lee interprets women as stronger than Fitzgerald, but can you connect Lee's characters to Fitzgerald's characters more. Compare what Scout does differently than Daisy.
dear brian f. ,
I agree with your ideas, I thought your evidence was very strong. However, I think you should go more in depth with your analysis .
- Allison C
Dear Emeline,
I thought you made a very good point and your evidence and analysis support your idea in a very strong way
- Allison C
Dear Jessica Casimiro I feel that that your thesis is the same by that i mean that there isn't any difference in what your trying to compare because your saying that in lee's book women are expected to act like women, but in fitzgerald women are expected to meet society's expectations. I feel that both are the same because in both books women are expected to meet certain requirements placed on them by society so there isn't any real difference.
Sunny,
I think your ideas were very unique and you should continue to expand
